Background:

Thrall’s mother was captured along with the rest of her tribe by an elite order of paladins. They were placed in a labor camp where they were forced to toil in the coal mines and stage gladiatorial fights. Thralls father was one of the camp guards. Taunted by his captors and disliked by his fellow slaves, he slew several guards and fled into the woodlands.

Role:

Thrall wants to make peace with the humans and free his tribe from enslavement. He could be used as a valuable ally, or a dangerous foe. Freeing his tribe might be a good quest hook.
